Born in Bulawayo, I spent the first 4 years of my schooling
in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe). As both my parents are South African
citizens they decided to return to South Africa in 1968 and
settle in Pretoria
My entire school career was in Pretoria, firstly at Robert
Hicks Primary School and then at Clapham High School, where I
matriculated in December 1976.
In January 1977 I was called up for National Service and
during the first 3 months of basic training I applied for
pilot training. In September of that year I was selected and
became a candidate of course 2/77. I qualified for my wings in
November 1978.
I then attended Officer’s Course at the South African Air
Force College after which I returned to Langebaanweg as a
Station Pilot
In 1979 I was sent to AFB Pietersburg for Impala OTC
(Operational Training Course) after which I was posted to 5
Squadron based at AFB Durban.
In 1983 I was privileged to be sent on Mirage Course which
was once again at AFB Pietersburg.
In January 1984 I was sent to 3 Squadron at AFB Waterkloof.
Just where I wanted to be - a dream come true! As long as I
can remember, my greatest ambition in life was to fly an
aircraft. The final event that convinced me that I
wanted to be a pilot was in 1971; when dad took me to an air
show at the old Baragwaneth airport just outside of
Johannesburg. There I saw the Mirage F1 perform an air display
that made the hairs on my neck and arms stand up with
excitement. That day I promised myself I would fly that
aircraft, even if it was the last thing I would ever achieve.
Little did I know what a life changing experience I would go
through while flying that aircraft.
In 1987 I had a flying
accident (see details on this website) and in
1991 I was medically discharged from the Air Force.
From 1991 to 1995 I was running a small business from home.
It was not mentally stimulating enough for me so in 1995 I
applied for a post at an IT company called INFOPLAN
In 1997, I left INFOPLAN and joined a company called QTT
(Quality Training Technologies). They specialized in Computer
Based Training for Aviation. They designed and wrote all the
lessons for the Pilot/Navigator/Air Traffic Controller
Training for the SA Air Force. They were also responsible for
the programming of the training material for the South African
Attack Helicopter, the ROOIVALK.
In January 2002 I retired myself from work so that I could
pay full time attention to the project. In June 2003 I was
forced back into employment because the required funding for
the project never materialized.
In July 2003 I joined National Airways Corporation in their
Charter office.
I also enjoy the inspirational speaking environment so I am
available to speak to anyone who will listen. Please contact
me at (012) 361 9268. |
